WHAT IS
LACTOSE?

Lactose is a type of sugar found in milk and other dairy products.
That’s why it’s also called "milk sugar." Lactose is normally digested in the small intestine.
The enzyme lactase breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose so that it can be absorbed by the intestinal lining.

If the amount of lactase enzyme is insufficient, lactose cannot be broken down and cannot be digested in the small intestine. When lactose is not properly digested, it ends up in the colon. Lactose ferments in the large intestine, releasing gases and water.

Lactose can be a risk factor for some people in relation to gas formation in the intestine.
